PRESS RELEASE

FAU Announces Dynamic Beam Shaping Research Project to Revolutionize Metal Additive Manufacturing

Date: 17.3.21

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) has selected Civan Advanced Technologies’ unique Dynamic Beam Laser to research Directed Energy Deposition (DED) for additive manufacturing of metal.

Civan’s Dynamic Beam Laser allows manufacturers to fully control beam shape, frequency, sequence and focus steering. Through their advanced capabilities, Dynamic Beam Lasers provide complete beam shaping control to make any shape, opening the door to countless new applications.

FAU was selected to invest €2.25M from the German Research Foundation’s (DFG) €8.6M funding project for improving industrial 3D printing processes in Metal Additive Manufacturing. After an exhaustive review of many proposals, FAU selected Civan’s OPA-20 Dynamic Beam Laser.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Schmidt, Chair of the Institute for Photonics Technology noted:

“We strongly believe that Dynamic Beam Shaping will open new possibilities in material processing, and are very excited to start using this groundbreaking technology. Dynamic Beam Shaping brings novel capabilities that will allow us to achieve major progress creating never-before-seen capabilities for next generation 3D printers.”

Dr. Eyal Shekel, CEO and Founder of Civan added: “We are proud and honored to have our laser placed in the leading institute under Prof. Schmidt’s management and become a part of such a unique and important journey. I would also like to thank the Israeli Innovation Authority for supporting the development of this technology and product”.

About Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Institute for Photonics Technology:

The Institute of Photonic Technologies is part of the Department Mechanical Engineering of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and does research on processes which use light as a tool to carry out all sorts of tasks. They are not only working on laser-based manufacturing technologies like laser beam cutting or welding but apply light as well in medical diagnostics and therapeutics, for example for the detection and treatment of cancerous tissue.
